The tragedy of the Sri Lanka Police Force

August 1, 2005

According to the editor of the Sunday Leader the tragedy of the Sri Lanka police force is to have a police chief who cannot stand up for his men. To be fair by the police chief he had a tough call; to choose between two sets of thugs. One in police uniform and the other the family and hangers on of a minister. Since the IGP does not want to be on the losing side he says there isn't enough evidence against the minister's son.

Mervyn Silva the newly appointed deputy minister of labour did start off his day by ordering a luxury car. After that his day did not match the description of a day in the life of a minister that I described few days ago.

The minister spent his day visiting the police station to bail out his son who is said to be at the center of the night club brawl.

The next act was to blast the media in filth and threaten them. All this was caught on camera.

The next day was spent organizing a protest campaign against the media. Sri Lankan journalists, known the world over for their remarkable lack of courage spent the day protesting in front of the fort railway station. If they had an iota of intelligence they would have chosen to boycott events attended by government MPs instead.

Just for the record. Minister Silva was overwhelmingly rejected by the voters. The dictator asked another MP to resign so that Mervyn Silva could be accomodated in parliament. Another such MP who was not even included in the list of contestants at the election now holds down three ministries.
