Deposing Dictators and Cricket.
July 13, 2005
The people power protests that was organized by the opposition UNP was perfectly timed. If they had held it on monday the 11th, a large number of colombo's office workers would simply have taken the day off stretching their weekend. The UNP supposedly brought in close to a million protestors to the city but there would have been precious few people to hear their voice.
Had the UNP chosen any day after the 12th, today for example they would not have been able to gather even a hundred thousand protestors. Why? The West Indies vs Sri Lanka cricket series starts today. Sri Lankans are far more concerned about their cricket than they are about their politics. This fact was amply proven during the last elections. The voices of sanity went unheard while people were glued to the television sets.
Until today a better part of each TV stations news telecast concentrated on the controversy sorounding the presidential election. Well there is no controversy. really. Unless of course you wish to believe a pack of lies told by a party that is proven totally incapable of telling the truth. Many ministers in this government and the president are compulsive liars.
From today onwards the news telecasts will claw back from the time alloted for the political commentry. They will be filled in with cricket commentary.
