Bombs in London

July 9, 2005

There has been a series of bomb explosions in London and as a sri lankan it's very easy to empathise with the people effect.

When a bomb goes off in a city, it does a lot more damage than death and destruction. Those who are witness to the event but survive carry emotional scars for the rest of their lives. Sometimes those who are dead are the lucky once, the injured have it worse. Many take years to fully recover. Some other never gain full use of their hands or feet again.

A bomb even effects those are no where near the vicinity of the blast. A person living in that city always has second thoughts about visiting a crowded area, a theater or a concert. They may not admit it but it's always at the back of their mind. Every unattended parcel or bag is looked at with suspicion. Security check points appear all over the city. Anyone who forgets to carry his ID stands a chance of being detained.

We Sri Lankans understand fully well what the Londoners will now go through. We used to live in such a climate for nearly 20 years. What we don't understand is why the LTTE a terrorist organization banned in many countries is allowed to operate openly in London.
