The UNP Proves that it has no shame

July 1, 2005

Everyone knows that politicians are without shame but it's something very hard to prove. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. In Sri Lanka if the police don't kill you while in detection (there were three such deaths last week) you stand a good chance at a trial. A good lawyer can easily buy a few witnesses and cops to get you off.

The United National Party, the gutless and spineless main opposition party has implicated themselves this time and given conclusive evidence that they are without shame.

Only a few weeks ago they brought about a no confidence motion against the Chief Minister of the western province. The equally shameless governing party the PA (which used to be the UPFA) fought the no confidence motion by suspending the council.

Once the sittings were resumed the motion was brought up again and the chief minister did the honourable thing by resigning. Honourable; if you ignore the rumours that he was offered seat in parliament if he resigned from the post. It would not have been the first time that a duly elected member of parliament was asked to resign to make way for another.

In the middle of all this the government's main coalition partner (VP) pulled out, the fall out was seen in the Western Provincial council as well and the result was that a pro JVP member of the PA was appointed to the new Chief minister.

So now to spite the JVP, the UNP which just a few weeks ago heaped scorn on the former chief minister and slung mud by the truck load wanted him back! Now the man smells of roses and butter would not melt in his mouth.
