The JM Smoke Screen,
June 27, 2005
More than enough as been said about the so called joint mechanism or the P-TOMS before and after the event by numerours pundits. What has not been said is that the P-TOMS is a smoke screen to divert the public attention from more serious issues.
The first is that the government after many vacillations has finally decided to go ahead with the Upper Kothmale Hydro Power project. That is to say it has been approved by the cabinet. The cabinet that includes Mr Thondaman, the leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress the CWC. It was the CWC that organized demonstrations and work stoppages against the projet. It was the CWC that said Not going ahead with the project is a pre condition for supporting the government.
Another very serious matter is the Sethusamudaran canal that india proposes to dredge through the Palk Straights. Since the JVP that once killed grocers for selling Indian Onions and Dhal is now madly in love with India.
The government was in no position to oppose it till now because the JVP was government. Now The JVP has made good their promise to quit but the People's Alliance (or what is left of the government) the ruling party is in deep debt to India as well.
The third equally disastrous project is the Coal Power plant, Rumour has it that a top level minister has secretly signed a deal with a Chinese company to begin work on it.
