One farce ends another begins

June 12, 2005

The 'farce unto death' by a monk at Kandy has finally ended thanks to the life line thrown to him by the chief priests and the president. At the same time another farce by another monk has begun in Colombo.

The JHU the party of the monks entered parliament by hijacking the political platform of the JVP during the last election, ever since then there has been great animosity between the two sides.

This latest copy cat death fast is to make sure that the JHU doesn't grab any more extremist sinhala buddhist votes from the JVP. What's hilarius is that the JHU had more votes from disgruntled UNP supporters than from their 'target market' of extremists.

The farce in Kandy took place at the historic temple of the tooth (Dalada Maligawa), one of the holiest of buddhist shrines. If anyone else had made a political statement from the Maligawa it would have set off dozens of death fasts but when monks politicise the sacred shrine it seems to be acceptable. No suprises there, this Sinhala/Buddhist extremist bastion is a city built on lies.
