Another resignation

June 9, 2005

We may just may see another resignation following the resignation of the minister in charge of the media. Speculation is ripe that the chief minister of the western province may step down. It's time that he did.

More than a month ago the opposition in the western provincial council proposed a vote of no confidence against the chief minister. The government's stragey unsuprisingly was to 'prorogue' the council, which means everything in the order paper lapses.

Since the parliament itself has suffered the same fate more than once, a mere provincial council treated this way is something that should be taken in your stride. The chief minister (Cooray) is so popular that even the government's coalition partner was setting up to vote against him.

So now you might think the chief minister will pack his bag and go home and spend some time with this family. Banish the thought. The newspapers are predicting that a member of parliament will be asked to step down, and the seat will be offered to Cooray. This comedy of errors started when Cooray gave up his parliamentary seat so that he can become the chief minister.

As a foot note it should be added that the JVP - the government's coalition partner was once dead against the provincial council system and as a result many people ended up being dead.
