Resignations Sri Lanka Style

June 8, 2005

Well finally we have seen a minister resign but it is yet another phony resignation. The minister who used to control the state media mafia has tendered his resignation. The reason given is that he is opposed to the proposed joint mechanism with the tigers for post tsunami reconstruction.

What he forgot to tell the public is that he has lost control of the state media - that is what the independent media kept telling us for the last couple of months. What Minister Samaraweera forgot to tell us is that he is still a minister despite resigning as the media minister.

eh how come? We have a government where every member of parliament from the ruling party is a minister. But it's wore than that, some people hold down more than one ministry post. That partly explains why this country does not go forward. With nearly a hundred ministries their tasks often seem to overlap resulting in beauracratic wrangling.

As for minister Samaraweera he continues to hold the post of minister of ports and shipping and as a result still enjoys the use of a fleet of vehicals, dozens of bodyguards and aids and a plush office.
