World Environment day

June 5, 2005

Today is World Environment day and the newspapers carry a story of how four elephants have been killed. That is the death of four elephants have been reported, many others go unreported.

Sri Lankans hate Elephants, the fact that we have a hugely commercialized elephant orphanage is ample proof of the fact. The killing of elephants was begun though by the british colonialist.

They thought nothing of killing elephants by the dozen for sport. When these sports ran out of elephants they turned to leopards, deer and south indian indented labourers.

The killings continue (not the labourers (that does happen occaisionally (due to the usual reasons that murders happen (they are never solved)))). It's very hard to come across a leopard or even a jungle fowl nowadays in what remains of Sri Lankan forests.

The post tsunami land grab zone (the buffer zone) is taking cares of some of what is left.

as a foot note: while searching google on this topic, I misspelled Environment and guess what came on top.
