Spit and Polish

June 4, 2005

Been reading Spit and Polish by Carl Muller, this is the third time this year that I am reading a book by Carl Muller and it just confirms my belief that he is someone who blows hot and cold.

Take the Jam Fruit Tree for example that is certainly a very good book by any standard, the same goes for Yakada Yaka but Colombo was nothing more than a turd.

So what of Spit and Polish? well it's obvious that if Carloboy Von Bloss is the Nick of Hemmingway's novels. Carloboy's father Sonnaboy is an Engine driver, Carl Mullers dad was on too. Some chapters of the book make interesting reading, some chapters, well it's downright disgusting and the incidence of the dead cat made my wife give up on it.

One thing though, I have learnt a lot about recent Sri Lankan history from his books. It was a big suprise for me to know that the Japanese air raid on Trincomalee was far deadlier than the one in Colombo, The role that Ceylon played in the war is hardly mentioned nowadays either by the British who ruled the country at the time or the Sri Lankans themselves. Certainly Sri Lankan terrorists have killed more people in Trinco than the japanese bombers did.

Having read up on the history of the war according to Carl Muller, I did a google and was quite suprised to find that the Duke of Endinburg served on a ship that was at one time based in Sri Lanka. I have not heard this mentioned anywhere else before.
