The monks have accused the government of betraying the territorial integrity of the country at the just concluded Kandyan summit. The reason? the government has been pushing for a so called joint mechanism with the LTTE. The purpose of the joint mechanism is supposedly to facilitate aid distribution in the tsunami effected areas of the north and east.

That's funny, everyone in Sri Lanka (that is everyone not effected by the tsunami) seems to have forgotten the tsunami already. Ask any of the hundreds of thousands languishing in refugees camps.

So what is this joint mechanism anyway? The prime minister for one does not know. Claims he hasn't been briefed about it. The JVP does not know either but they oppose it. The UNP does not know either, they will support it, if the JVP pulls out of the government.

As for the summit itself, a monk representing the JHU, (their political party), made an inpromptu speech at the donor conference denouncing the LTTE. Though I do not generally condone the actions of the JHU, someone should do something about everyone (including the government) trying to white wash the LTTE as a bunch of tame pussy cats. In truth as the monk pointed out, they are bunch of ruthless killers hell bent on recruiting child soldiers.
