Everyone on Strike

May 6, 2005

Railway Engine Drivers have been on strike for a couple of days now. Nothing unusual about that, one department or the other with in the railway is always on strike. Trains don't run on time anyway.

The finance minister has named five government organizations as monsters. The Railway is one of them. The Ceylon Petrolium Corporation is another. They are now on strike. Well they call it a work to rule campaign. If they really worked according to the rules things will be more efficient but this just ploy to do even less work than they usually do.

Their reason for striking is that the government wants to restructure the CPC and the Ceylon electricity board to improve inefficiency. And that brings us to the CEB, they are also on strike. What is amusing is the fact that most strikes are organized by the president's coalition partners, the JVP.

The next to go on strike will be the bus operators, they will want a increase in fares because of the increase of the price of fuel. More on that later.
