The Monsoon
May 7, 2005
It looks like the monsoon may finally be upon us. April is usually one of the hottest months in Sri Lanka. This april was one of the worst. It is perhaps more accurate to say april is one of the most hot and humid months in Sri Lanka.
It is very rare for the temperatue to exceed 35'C anywhere in Sri Lanka. That is because we are an island nation and there is always a cool see breeze to cool things down. What is unbearable is the very high levels of humidity. However the temperatute itself may be going upwards since the country has far fewer trees than it used to have a few years ago. The average Sri Lankan just hates trees.
The monsoon does hit around about this month. People say it comes in time for Wesak. Weather patterns sure have been changing, we now experience rains when it is not expected and we have droughts when we should be having floods. You cannot blame all off these on the wanten felling of trees, some of it has to do with global warming.
One thing is certain; most of the Tsunami victims will have to weather the rains under leaky roofs. This corrupt and inefficient government has done everything possible to make sure that they will not have permanent shelter.
