The death of Tharaki (aka Sivaram), the editor of tamilnet.com at the hands of hard line elements of the government has provided the LTTE with a trump card to play in the international arena.

Sucessive Sri Lankan governments have been using the state media mafia for the sole benefit of their MPs and ministers while totally ignoring the international media. The LTTE on the other hand has been targeting most of their propaganda at international newspapers, radio and tv.

The tamilnet website is a pro LTTE organization. Some (eg the JVP) even go so far as to say it is an LTTE website. The death of it's editor has provided the LTTE with the perfect opportunity to cry wolf in the international arena about how the voice of tamil nationalism has been silenced by the bullets of the Sinhala hard liners.

The LTTE for their part is responsible for quite a few deaths including those of journalists and tamil liberals. The difference is that the imbeciles of the Sri Lankan governments have never been able to gain international sympathy and support because of those killings. In fact they are almost never reported in other countries.
