Independence day

February 4, 2005

Another farcial independence day ceremony has been carried out with people's movements restricted by roads being closed. Last year on independence day the president spoke of all politicians working together to rebuild the nation. The same story is repeated this year and if she continued to hold on to power (illegally) till next year no doubt the story will be repeated.

Last year she was seen having a friendly chat with her old buddy, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe. With in weeks she was smiling again as she dissolved parliament and called for fresh elections signalling the end of democracy in sri lanka.

Though we are an independent country, we are not a free country. Civil liberties are being eroded with the police being the biggest violators of fundamental rights. Even todays news paper carries a story about an assault by police officers.

Come to think of it we are not an independent country at all, until this government came to power, when ever the world bank said jump they jumped. This government asks 'how high'?
