Extremism
May 14, 2005
The hallmark of an extremist is his inability to listen to reason. This quality can be observed among the few people who stil sing the praises of the JHU.
Hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans voted for the monks at the last election. At the time some of them genuinely felt that that the monks will make a difference, clean up the Sri Lankan political system as they promised. Others voted for the monks because they were disapointed with the UNP but the UPFA made them puke. Many of these people will not vote for the monks if they stand for election again but some people will.
A person who is not fanatical or an extremist can be swayed and will listen to other opinion. When you have an argument with such a person though he may disagree with 90% of what you say there will be certain points on which he agrees with you. Similarly there will be certain occaisions where you can agree with that person's point of view.
A fanatic on the other hand never agrees with anything that you say. When he cannot logically shoot down your statements he starts making illogical utterences or completely overlooks that point in his own response. It seems that more and more people who still support the government or the JHU seems to exibit these qualities. The stage is set for book burning and progroms.
