Another giant has fallen
February 3, 2005
There used to be huge tamrind tree not far from my mother-in-law's house. It's no more. This tree used to stand at the boundary of a private house and the Battaramulla bus stand. The owner of the house has cut it down.
His motives are likely to be two fold. He would be able to sell the timber for a hefty sum and he would be able to encroach on the land that belongs to the bus stand. Land in this area is very expensive, battaramulla is one of the most expensive suburbs of Colombo. If this guy can encroach on 1 perch of land he will be better off by several hundred thousand rupees.
So why doesn't the police do anything about it? The police in sri lanka does not even investigate murders or rapes how can you expect them to investigate something like this? The tree used to stand less than 2 Kilo Meters from the parliament and the ministry of enviorenment.
Why doesn't the general public (the people who use the bus stand everyday for example) do something about it? Sri Lankans just don't give a damn what happens to their country or to nature.
