Another great leap backwards

February 1, 2005

Sri Lanka's printing, publishing and advertising industries are not as technologicaly advanced as their counterparts in India and some of the other countries in the region. Now the government has imposed new laws to make sure that the gap widens.

As you all know politicians and public servants in sri lanka are not known for their intelligence. The pepople with the lowest IQs are asigned to the police force (makes it easier for the politicians to manipulate them). Now the imbeciles at the police have recomended a ban on the import of certain types of printers and scanners because they could be used to print forged currency notes.

The real reason for the ban is probably because the cops found that their bribes were being paid in forged notes and they were really annoyed by it. Unlike in other countries policemen have no interest in tackling crime. On one of those
rare occaision during which the president speaks the truth she accused the police and the judiciary of being totally corrupt.

Because of the ban on sophisticated printers, someone wanting to print a hundred brochures or visiting cards will have to rush to the nearest offset printer press instead of having it printed in house. Instead of scanning and emailing documents, people will now have to fax them (in black and white).

All this is surely going to add to the cost of goods and services. That of course is of no concern to politicians or policemen, they will just dip their hands further into the state coffers.
