A month after the tsunami.

January 26, 2005

It's now a month since the tsunami ravaged our coast line with the sad loss thousands of lives. All hopes that we had of rebuilding a better Sri Lanka has now unfortunately faded.

The comment by the prime minister that the people in charge of relief operations have not even seen the inside of a refugee camp sums up the sad state of affairs pretty well.

Some of the displaced people are not getting any aid at all while the main southern towns of Galle and Matara are said to be inundated. Thousands of people who want to rebuild their houses are been prevented from doing so. While 500 acres of forest has been needlessly cut down by the government to relocate one coastal town.

No action has been taken against the looters, the kidnappers and even the rapists that have preyed on the survivors. Emergency regulations have been imposed supposedly to apprehend the culprits. In truth it is intended to provide the government with the means to stiffle any protests that spring up against the government's plan to suspend elections.

Greed is the underlying theme of the relief efforts. Big businesses are politicians from all parties are joinining hands to make a fast buck. Insurance companies are pretending that they are doing their customers a favour when they are settling claims. Construction companies and building material suppliers are licking their lips in anticipation of gains to come.

Religious zealots of all faiths (evengelical churches in particular) are said to be fishing in troubled waters, trying to get people to convert into their religons. If any one had any doubts that god does not exist they should have been dispelled by the tsunami.
