If you can't beat them join them

January 24, 2005

"If you can't beat them join them", that sums up the attitude of the country's opposition. The UNP, the main opposition party, has proven with out any doubt that it is incapable of winning elections in this country. So then the best approach would then be to join them.

The UNP for example has repeated made statements about being in full support of the government's reconstruction effort. It did make an obligatory whimper about the 'no elections for five years' comment by the president but has maintained a stony silence over many issues including the land grab on the beaches.

Rumours abound that the government intends to utilize some of the funds that have come in on grandoize projects like a new railway track and a coal power plant. That certainly is not want the donors want or the people effected by the tsunami want. They just want to rebuild their houses and fishermen want to go back to see. Yet the opposition parties have not raised their voices on behalf of these people.

The opposition did not cry out on behalf of the birds or elephants who lost their homes when 500 acres of forest was cut down in order to move the hambantota town. The opposition has maintained a stony silence about the government's refusal of Israeli aid. More importantly nothing is been said about the emergency regulations.
