No more elections
January 20, 2005
At the foundation laying ceremony for the new hambantota town, the president has claimed that there will not be another election for another 5 years. When the president makes such utterences they are usually in Sinhala, so that they do not get a lot of attention in the foreign media, or lot of attention from the powers that be in Us, Europe, or Japan.
The president and her party pledged to establish a dictatorship before the last election was held. Their promise that they would change the constitution with or with out the required two thirds majority is the only promise that they intend to keep.
The average sri lankan being of low IQ did vote for them and they managed to obtain 45% of the total vote, which is not even enough for a simple majority in parliament but that didn't stop them from trying to go ahead with the constitutional change.
In order to supress any opposition that would arise against her dictatorial policies emergency regulations have to be used. To this end the president's party kept on trying to push the LTTE towards war, to no avail. Then deliverance came in the form of a tsunami (do politians care that 30,000 have died? hell no).
Now we have a state of emergency and more importantly we have a spineless and brainless opposition bending over backwards to accomodate every wish of the government because they do not want to appear to be opposed to the tsunami relief efforts.
The truth is there is no relief effort. The new town for hambantota is just a farce, a grand manuvere for the politicians to grab the beach front land for themselves and earn millions in kick backs from contractors and timber merchants.
