500 acres falls under the axe

January 19, 2005

When the president said she wants to make colombo a garden city, I foretold that the trees are doomed Today we see that 500 acres of forest has been cleared to start a new town for hambantota.

It would have been acceptable if the people of hambantota wanted to move inland, they do not. The politians of this country who have never worked together on national issues have rallied behind the president to help her clear the little forest cover that is left. They also behind her efforts to fill up the marsh lands in the east coast to build a new town for Kalmunai.

All this is part of the government's effort to free up land along the coast lines so that they can grab it for themselves.
