Pongal

January 16, 2005

Yesterday was pongol day, How different things are this pongal day when you compare with the events of last year.

Last year the political situation in the country was very different, the PA and the JVP had just joined their dirty hands to topple the government (that had resurected the economy. (These two political parties have a strong deslike for economic growth because a majority of their voters are from the under privileged classes)). Part of their agitation campaign was a demonstration on pongal day.

The PA has morphed itself many times by varius unholy alliances in the past, indeed whenever it governed the country it has always been with a coalition partner as is happening now.

The track record of the PA is very bad when it comes to respecting minority rights. The JVP on the other hand is an out and out sinhala extremist organization. Having said that the black july violence in 1983 happened when the UNP was in power. With politicians there is always a big gap between saying and doing.

This year sees another year in which tamils can celebrate in peace. The cease fire was in place last year but people lived in fear that it will not hold because the PA was (still is) trying to push the LTTE towards breaking it. Then there was the protest march which some people called an outright attempt to insult the tamils.
