State of Emergency and making hay.
January 14, 2005
Apparently we are now living under a state of emergency. The government has silently declared emergency status on the 4th of january. No publicity was given at all to the declaration, which is obviously in keeping with the governments policy of 'not doing what it says and not saying what it does'
The goverment has been playing chicken with the LTTE, trying to provoke them towards casting the first blow and the break the ceasefire since april last year. Fortunately for the country the LTTE didn't take the bait. The government desparately wanted a resumption of hostilities because of their stated intention of changing the constitution unconstitutionally.
Even the spineless opposition UNP cannot be expected to sit still while that happens. Having emergency regulations means processions and demonstrations can be banned and their organizers arrested. Thus providing the UNP with a perfect excuse not to stage demonstrations.
The tsunami has not just presented the politians with another opportunity for kickbacks but it has also increased their chances of establising a dictatorship.
