How often do tsunamis strike?

January 12, 2005

Sri Lanka, unlike lots of other countries has a recorded history. Though the authors of the mahawahsa, the great chronicle of Sri Lankan have been economical with the truth, it's unlikely that they would have lied about a tsunami striking the island or not write about it.

Thus it's safe to assume that the last time a tsunami struck our coast it was around 2,000 years ago. When krakatoa disappeared from the face of the earth the seas around the country is said to have receded but it rose back gently instead of thundering down in the form of a giant wave.

Thus it would seem that tsunamis are a phenomenon that strikes the island once every 2,000 years. Unfortunately this is not a country that puts a great deal of faith in statistics. Simply put, Sri Lankans lack the capacity to intepret statistics. Sadly the president also falls into this category how else can you justify the 'no new new buildings with in 300m from the coast line rule'?
