A Tidal Wave of Stupidity.

January 5, 2005

Around 40,000 people have died due to the combined stupidity of the meterogical deparment and geological and mineral bearau. Had the employees of these organizations been vigilant thousands of lives could have been saved.

Just after the tsunami struck Sri Lanka's representative at the United Nations made a plea for aid. His shopping list (yes shopping list) included water. Why on earth do we need water? After everything that has happened the Galle Town still has pipe born water. Travel 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) inland from any of the disaster areas and you find hundreds and thousands of wells that have been uneffected.

Since water was on the shopping list, many planes that arrived in Sri Lanka with relief supplies did bring water in them. It is a great pity to see such generousity been wasted due to the stupidity of the Sri Lankan goverment. Another stupid act followed soon after, when the government turned down an offer by Israel to send soldiers to help.

A couple of days after the tsunami struck there were a few after shock (which were truely negligible in magnitude compared to the 9.0 of the main quake). Though the government itself did not ask people to vacate the shoreline the police in many coastal towns did. Several people have been injured in the panic that followed and relief operations were badly hampered.

Now the government in it's idocy has banned the construction of houses with in hundred meters from the shoreline.
