Human Vultures

January 2, 2005

A pheonix has not yet risen from the rubble of the tsunami's destruction but all sorts human vultures have.

The most prominent and most noticable are the politicians. They are stumbling over each other in their haste to get to the effected areas. Though they travel in convoys of vehicles they never take anything with them. They do everything they can to get their ugly mugs on television but many of them have not yet donated a red cent (of their ill gotten gains) to the relief efforts.

Another vulture is the corporate vulture. They are carrying advertisements in the newspapers and tv asking their employees and effected customer to get in touch with them - a thinly veiled publicity stunt. One company has even resorted to spamming.

Keels Super markets, a company owned by one of the largest bluechips in sri lanka have sent out an email suggesting that we order goods from their super markets and they will see to it that the goods are delivered to the effected places. Another thinly veiled marketing campaign.

Compare this with Singer, another bluechip that has pledged to take care of one entire village to feed the homeless not just this week but until their houses are built. Singer is said to have offered them help to rebuild their houses too.
