A cup final at last

August 1, 2004

The most glorious day in Sri Lanka's sport's history was when the country won the world cup of cricket. Since then the team has managed to win a few tournaments but nothing in recent times. To make matters worse the team had to suffer the worst ever defeat at home recently at the hands of the australians.

The blame for the recent fiascos lie with the selectors who appointed a man who had been moth balled long ago as Captain. Hashan was a good batsmen in his youth but had never shown no leadership skills and it's doubtfull if he had ever thought a positive thought. However unlike the selectors he is a gentlemen and realizing his own short comings gladly stepped down.

Since then despite the efforts of the selectors the cricket team has been on the rise and culiminated in winning the Asia Cup just a little while ago.

Interestingly the architect of the Sri Lankan world cup win - Sanath Jayasuriya had been under increasing pressure from ill informed journalists before the touranament began. It's quite a suprise because Jayasuriya continued to score a reasonable number of runs and had a respectable average over the last two years.

These lilly livered journalists never dared to attack the former captain described above probably because they were worried that free drinks at the club house and free tickets would dry up. (According the media minister majority of Sri Lankan reporters would do anything for a bottle of moonshine - he is wrong one glass is often more than enough).

Jayasuriya silenced his critics by taking Sri Lanka into the finals with two successive hundreds. Even though he couldn't score a lot of runs in the final he still managed to take three wickets which more than comphensates for the lack of runs. It's the second time in as many months that the daily mirror in particular was made to eat humble pie
