Opposition to the bill mounts
July 22, 2004
Finally the country is beginning to recognize the evil masquerading in the form of monks in parliament. Around seventy percent of the country's population claim to be devout Buddhist. Yet they seem blissfully unware that the Lord Buddha preached tolerance and understanding.
How else can you account for 7 monks entering parliament on a lot of retoric and stirring up anger against missioneries of other religions in this country? Everyone has a fundamental right to promote their religion. Now the monks have presented a bill in parliament that will take away this right.
Many people believe this bill to be unconstitutional, but parliamentarians have little respect for the constituion. It is for this reason that some civic rights groups have petitioned the courts. In a country where the chief justice has supposedly been framed by the police there is little hope that the legal system will prevail.
The root cause of the terrorist problem we face is the 'sinhala only' policy enacted by the current president's father more than 50 years ago. In 50 years time people will point the fingure at the anti conversion bill and say it's the root cause of the terrorism problem that plagues the country in 2054.
