Parliament meets and no one dies.
July 20, 2004
the last time the parliament of the banana republic of Sri Lanka met a monk was said to have been 'kicked in the balls'. Rather crude but it's difficult not to be crude when describing the actions of Sri Lanakn parliamentarians.
Many of the lawmakers were elected to that august assembly after breaking many election laws. Not a week passes by without news of some incidence of thuggery or blant misuse of power by member of parliament or their hangers on.
In this backdrop the voters were expecting another round of fisticuffs after parliament met today after a gap of more than a month (yes they did get paid). When the monk was assaulted the public galleries had been full of school girls so in anticipation the public galleries were closed this time around.
Either the MPs are better behaved when they are not trying to show off, or the Sri Lankan politicians have been indulging in their second favourite passtime - that of sleeping with the enemy because apparently parliamentary meetings had been concluded without anyone getting their microscopic brains bashed in.
