Daily Mirror, two wrongs do not make a right
July 16, 2004
Th other day I wrote about how the Daily Mirror was made to eat humble pie over it's unashamed attack on Chaminda Vaas. A couple of weeks before that the same journal had a rather nasty rotten egg on it's face over a political cartoon.
It started with a cartoon that was possibly reproduced from a US newspaper, it was an attack on Saudi Religious schools. In it a father asks his son what he learnt in school and is told a tale of bombs and deception. This obviously angered the moslem population of the country.
Now it must be said that Sri Lankan moslems are a very pleasent and peace loving group of people who are very tolerant of other religions. Their anger at the cartoon in question is justifiable. So to placate them the Daily Mirror published another cartoon the next day - this time reproduced from an Arab Newspaper - it was a blatant attack on jews.
They would have been pretty confident of not raising any hackles with that. I have never met a hebrew speaking Sri Lankan, if they exists surely they number less than a hundred. But that still does not make it right. If this is the way leading journals behaving what can we expect from the politicians.
