Daily Mirror Made to eat humble pie
July 14, 2004
All Sri Lankan newspaper pick and choose whom they wish to attack. Sportsmen who have an off day are easy targets. So that is why the sports page of the Daily Mirror had one inch headlines accusing Chaminda Vaas; the second best bowler Sri Lanka has ever produced, of gifting the match to the aussies. The same paper did not utter a word when the former captain gifted them an entire series on a platter
It does not matter that Vaas and Murali have been serving the team for a decade with distinction, vass is recoginzed as one of the best bowlers in the world when it comes to the one day version. He isn't as dangerous an the longer version but only Murali has taken more wickets for Sri Lanka than vaas in either version of the game.
The man had an off day (well 4 off days really) during the just concluded second test match in australia. Sri Lanka's spineless journalists, the very ones who have never fired a broadside at corrupt politicos were sharpening their knives... then came day 5. Sri Lanka precariously placed with no hopes of winning the match but with a snowballs chance in hell of holding on grimly to for a draw.
Guess what? they did it thanks to Vaas the batsmen.
