2/3 Lies

July 12, 2004

These two words would some up what the Sri Lankan politicans have been telling the voters through out the past year. Not just the party in power but all politican parties. They are not merely 'being economical with the truth' but shelling out blantant white lies.

One such lie spewed by the UPFA, the party in power, the party that wants to change the constitution without the required 2/3 majority is that it's impossible to obtain a 2/3 majority with the current electoral system.

The few minister with the knowledge of mathematics at least equal to a ten year old would know that the provincial council elections held on saturday belies that statement. In several provinces the UPFA came very close to achieving that majority and could possibly muster the support of small parties by hook or by crook to get the magical 2/3 figure.

Statistics don't always tell the truth either specially in a country where surveys are rigged. Despite the claims by the UPFA that they recieved an overwhelming mandate what really happened was that the UNP supporters stayed home and drank their beer, repelled by the spineless and brainless antics of the UNP. The party of the ayatollah in yellow robes stayed away from the elections all together.

Thus it was in this backdrop that the UPFA won all six provinces but with a significantly smaller number of votes than they polled at the last parliamentary elections.
