The return of the koel
July 2, 2004
The lady koel has returned. She made a renewed attak on the sparrows nest today. As with previous attacks this was sucessfully fended off, this time with they had a little help from a robin.
It's remarkable how these smaller birds band together in the fight against the koel. It must be based on the old theory that my enemies enemy is my best friends. The sparrows and the robins do not get along very well. Probably because they eat the same kinds of food.
On an earlier occaision the Bul buls joined with sparrows in their fight. All these birds seem to dislike the koel becuase she lays here eggs in the nests of other birds. The hatchlings who used to live in the sparrow nest have now left it and it seems the lady sparrow may have laid a fresh set of eggs.
The last time I wrote on these battles I promised that there would be action photos. Well it didn't happen. I have done the most stupid thing possible taken shots with a camera that does not contain film. Yikes. If that's not bad enough a few days later my father took the same camera and went on a trip to the wilpattu national park.
There he used the 300mm lens to shoot a leopard the most elusive of Sri Lankan mammals. Naturally I recieved quite an earfull.
