I don't give too hoots about democracy.
June 29, 2004
Can you hazard a guess who might have said that? is it Roberr Mugabe? Saddam Hussein you are wrong. How about the ayatollah? wrong again.
The headline of the daily mirror reads "I don't care 'two hoots' to Opposition: CBK". CBK is the president of Sri Lanka. It's actually a translation of a statement made by the president at a school, as usually happens such meetings a transformed into political events by the participating MPs, Ministers or even Presidents. (School principals have a bad habit of inviting politians as chief guests at school functions. Surely they don't want their students to emulate the politians?)
What the president's statement effectively means is that she does not care two hoots about democracy. That's because her party does not control a majority in parliament and "people power" is with the opposition who gathered 55% of the total votes polled and not with her party. Fortunately for the UPFA the opposition does not care two hoots either.
She has also repeated that old line about winning 2/3 of the electorate. Some of the elementary school students may have been tempted to correct her math.
