Back to Colombo

June 28, 2004

It's back to Colombo from The Great Western and it's amazing what difference a mere 140 kilometer can make in this country.

The temperature never rose above 17'C during our stay their, today the temparature in Colombo is nudging close the 30'C and it hasn't rain here since the 18th. We return to the house to find all the plants have withered in their pots.

Compare that with the hill country it has rained nearly everyday since May and the weather is just wonderfull. You may ask what's so wonderfull about heavy rain, well the answer is, that it's the way it's supposed to be in the wet zone of Sri Lanka. Dozens of rivers that flow through the dry zone have their origins in the dripping wet hills of Horton Plains, Adams Peak and other mountains that sorround them. When the rainfall in the hill drops below average the dry zone becomes a parched cracked up wasteland.

We drove down to Kothmale yesterday. Kothmale is best known for treacle and the Kothmale Dam. For the first time in years the resovoir has filed up and what a breath taking site that is. (so what about the photos? they are still in the camera)
