The unkidest cut or censorship

June 15, 2004

A monk almost had the unkindest cut of all delivered to him in parliament administered by thugs masquerading in the guise of members of parliament.

While this priest is still in hospital, the government is getting ready for another kind of cutting; the censor's cut. In fact they have already begun. The ministry (can't remember the minister's name there are 65 of them) in charge of the film industry has already ordered that films that erode Sri Lanka's cultural values should not be screened.

If outright lying by public figures, false values, yellow robed ayatollahs and beating them up in parliament is Sri Lankan culture it certainly needs a lot of protection.

Film censorship usually means all kinds of gory violence with gallons of blood being spilt is ok, but even a peck on the cheek between family members will not be shown. Of course all this is just a prelude, a chance for the censor to get some practice before he starts censoring news items.
