World Enviornment day
June 6, 2004
Yesterday was wolrd enviorenment day. The city's sanitation workers were probably taking part in some ceremony, that's why they forgot to pick up the garbage. There is a myriad of ceremonies, (often lorded over by petty politians) 300 days of the year so the garbage doesn't get picked up on these days. The other 65 days they are usulaly on holiday.
Yesterdays newspapers carried almost nothing on enviorenmental awareness, sri lankan news editors and reports usually don't know what's going on anyway. Only one prominent company come out with any ad campaigns to mark the day. That was odel, Colombo's favourite fashion outlet. Sri Lankan companies are rarely sincere about anything but there is no doubt that this company really cares.
Yesterday, the super market minions continued to place each over packed item in the shopping cart in to a big plastic bag of it's own. Fishermen with light coarse nets continued to bring in undersigned fish. Illicit logging went on all over the country and ancient diesel vans bellowing plumes of thik black smoke were driven past traffice cops who just pointed the radar at them and let them go - if they were under the speed limit.
