A Hobsons Choice

May 15, 2004

It is said that the two party electoral systems leaves the voters with only a Hobson's choice. That's probably why the JVP started becoming more and more popular during the late nineties. Indeed their main slogan was that both major political parties are equally corrupt, power hungry and hell bent of selling state assets for a song (all of which was probably true).

But then the JVP threw in their lot with the PA to form the UPFA. Of course many of the gullible people who voted for the UPFA thought they would do things differently. While in oppositions they accused the Norwagian facilitators of the peace process of being LTTE stooges but they have again been asked to faciliate.

While in the opposition they promised not to import rice (to save the farmer from ruin), but they also promised to bring down the cost of living so they may now have to import rice. Indeed this is what the trade minister has said the government will do.

Last but not least both the PA and the JVP refused to recognize the LTTE as the sole representatives of the North and Eastern tamils. The LTTE on the other hand refused to negotiate on any other basis. So the UPFA has conceded that point.

However the forked tongue spokesmen of the JVP and the PA are mincing their words to prove otherwise.
