Indian Election Results Follow Sri Lankan Patterns
May 13, 2004
The results from the Indian Election are coming in, it seems they have followed the same pattern that the Sri Lankan election results followed just six weeks ago. (Yes it has been six weeks since the elections, but with all things that have been happening (including Murali's dusra being banned (In sri lanka and india cricket is more important than politics))) it seems so long ago.
Anyway just after the election was concluded it looked like Sri Lanka may have it's first Tamil prime minister, India looks set to have it's first Italian born prime minister. (It didn't quite work out for Mr Kadirgamar)
The party that won the Sri Lankan election (the UPFA) doesn't have enough seats to form a government and it looks like the congress may not get enough seats either.
The UNP (UNF) lost power in Sri Lanka after bringing peace to the country, improving the country's image abroad and last but not least resurrecting the economy that was in the red.
The tensions between India and Pakistan have eased at last (they are even playing criket with each other). The economy is seeing near double digit growth and India's image has certainly improved.
Not having been to india in a long time, I don't know if the last Indian Government was as corrupt as the last Sri Lankan one (probably not). Then again the congress doesn't plan to bring about a dictatorship like the UPFA has threatened to do.
