The Rain

May 1, 2004

Yesterday during the drive from Colombo to the Great Western it rained. Not the wispy stuff you get outside the tropics, but real rain pouring down as if a great big dam in the sky had breeched. It cascades by the bucketfull reducing visibiliy to just a few meters in the middle of the after noon.

I thoroughly enjoy driving in this weather. Sri Lankan drivers are totaly incompent yet cocky - they think driving slow on the fast lane is their birth right. But then the there is only one lane on this narrow and winding road that takes you through the lush green country side.

Weather like this causes this drivers to pull to a crawl, and thankfully get to the edge of the road. The fact that I was driving my father's 4WD yesterday did help but I would have drivern pretty much the same in my '89 bimmer (she handles beautifully)

It hasn't rained like this in ages, probably because most of the forest cover has disappeared in recent years but such weather wasn't very unusual around five years ago. Even earlier there were many many days when I stayed away from school due to extremely wet weather.
