The UNP wakes up at last

April 29, 2004

The UNP has finaly realized that they may never be elected to power again - if the UPFA changes the constitution 'unconstitutionaly'. They have finally started to talk about it.

While being manifestly unconstitutional, the Constituent Assembly mechanism for constitutional change will also set a dangerous precedent which serves to reduce the constitution to the status of an ordinary Act of Parliament, amenable to amendment or repeal by simple majority, thereby undermining the guarantees of constitutional government including fundamental rights.

hmm maybe they have been reading this blog, this is what I have been saying all along, their release goes on to say:

The UPFA claims to have obtained a mandate from the people to change the Constitution by, way of a Constituent Assembly. However, cursory analysis of' the General Election reults reveals that this alleged mandate is no mandate at all. The UPFA has obtained only 45.6 % of the popular vote and a roughly commensurate 105 seats in parliament. Thus it is clear that the UPFA cannot by any stretch of the imagination claim to have received a 'mandate' from the people to take so drastic a step as to change the constItUtion by extra constitutional means.

Well hopefully the UNP will do a lot more than talk about it, Sri Lankan are very good at talking, talk shows probably take up the largest slice of air time on Sri Lankan tv, and UNP parliamentarians will join many of them, but it remains to be seen if they will take to the streets or not.
