governing by crisis
April 21, 2005
The UPFA has been (mis)ruling the country for an year now. Their rule has been just a matter of stepping from one crisis to another. First there were the nothern tigers blazenly violating the ceasefire agreement to travel through goverment areas to attack the break away group.
The UPFA found that the UNPs 'bury the head in the sand like an ostrich' approach was the best way to deal with ceasefire violoations, even though this was one of the main pillars of the UPFA campaign during the election.
Now things are getting worse with the Sunday Times providing conclusive proof that the tigers have built an air strip and even brought and aircraft into the country. So why is it that the JVP sponsered patriotic national movement, the one that took to the streets against the UNP's silence in face of all the LTTE ceasefire violations haven't done so this time around?
The biggest crisis during the UPFA year of governence was the total mismanagement of the tsunami relief campaign. Not suprisingly hundreds of thousands of people are still living in tents even four months after the tsunami. One gets the feeling that the government wants to keep them there, that way their votes can be stolen at the next election.
While on the subject of elections, many people think an election is just around the corner, what with the UPFA coalition partners the JVP and the PA pulling in opposite directions all the time. Then again the government is equally aware that even by stealing the votes of the tsunami victims they will not get as many votes as they did last time. To make the issue even murkier, the UNP has amply demonstrated their inability to win any sort of election.
And in the meantime, another school principal has been suspended accused of taking bribes to accept students into government schools. Free educations is not so free after all.
