Unsung Hero of Cricket

April 26, 2004

Chaminda Vaas is no doubt cricket's greatest unsung hero. Probably because he is in the same team as the best bowler the world has ever seen. Vaas is a seam bowler and who would argue that Pollock, McGrath, Bond and Akthar are more destructive than Vaas is.

Then consider this the three lowest totals in one day cricket are against Sri Lanka, they are 35 by zimbabwe only yesterday, 36 by Canada and 38 by Zimbabwe again. Surely no matter how weak the opposition is you have to be a really really good bowler to get a side out for such low scores? After all it needs only a couple of edges to fly past slip, an inside edge to brush the leg stump on the way to the boundary to beat this kind of score.

Now consider this, the chief destroyer in all three occaisions was Chaminda Vaas. The first time he lowered the record, his own bowling figures was the best ever figures in one day cricket. A figure that's very unlikely to be broken because you only get to bowl ten overs, and vaas took eight wickets in his ten.
