Has democracy been saved?

April 24, 2004

When all the smaller political parties got together with the UNP to defeat the UPFA candidate for the post of speaker it looked for a breif moment like democracy may have been saved but it seems the UPFA is still very keen to set up a dictatorship.

The UPFA does not have the 2/3 majority to change the constitution. They don't even havea a simple majority. They are most definitely not united on other issues.

Their plan was to make the parliament a constitutional council and to make a 'constitutional revolution'. It was speculated that the speaker will chair the council. Fortunately all the parties elected a member of the opposition as speaker.

Todays newspapers carry a statement from the UPFA that they still want to go ahead with the constitutional change. It still looks like 45% of the countries voters have voted away everyone's right to vote
