Arjuna Ranathunga

April 13, 2004

Looks like there is a glimmer of hope for this country. Arjuna Ranathunga, the former captain of the Sri Lanka Cricket team has turned down the offer of a deputy minister post.

It's an act that has to be applauded because with ministries comes a lot of perks including a fleet of vehicles, body guards, personal assitants, trips abroad, a plush office, free trips and a chance to get the old ugly mug on tv. (Arjuna Ranathanga as a sports star has been on tv more often than the rest of the cabinet put together.).

Ranathunga lead the Sri Lankan team to victory in the 1996 cricket world cup. After his retirement from the game he entered politics as a member of the SLFP (one of the parties that make up the UPFA) - a party that his father has long represented.

Ranathunga claims he was offered the ministry of sports before the election. Now that ministry has been given to a former actor. This mediocre actor has not been assigned the film industry. If he is not good enough to handle the film industry surely he is not good enough to handle an the sports ministry which he knows very little.

Foot Note (Added May 09, 2004):
Ranathunga has accepted the deputy minister post after all
