Democracy and the will of the people
May 19, 2004
How would you feel if the person you voted for at the elction was elected to parliament but was asked to resign to make way for another?
This is excatly what three members of the UPFA have been asked to do by the party leader. Making an elected representative step down to make way for some one who was rejected is alarming and just reconfirms that the UPFA does not care too hoots about democracy. But consider this one of the new MPs who were sworn in yesterday in this manner wasn't even in the list of candidates.
That's right a prime minister of a previous government has made his way in to parliament even though his name wasn't in the list of nominees. So far the yellow colored newspapers and the lilly livered UNF has maintained a stony silence on this.
