April 13, 2004
Today is new year's day in Sri Lanka.
Great, but what with the good looking birds?

The bird pictured here is the koel, the black featured one is the male the other three photos are of a female. The loel is said to herald the arrival of the new year with her cries.
These photos don't really do justice to them. But then they were not taken with a lot of effort. They were snapped from my window in my sub-urban home. I used my battered and bruised Nikon FM10 with a 300mm Zigma lens.
A few years ago there werent that many birds in this neighbourhood which is just 5 Km from the heart of the city (Colombo is not a big city). The birds may be moving in because their traditional habitat is being destroyed; Sri Lankans just hate trees.
