Sri Lanka an Indian State?

April 9, 2004

During the days of the last government it was accused of attempting to make Sri Lanka into a member of the united states. (Surely that would have been a good thing. we wouldn't have to worry about the dollar appreciating almost daily against the rupee). The truth was that the last goverment had much more support from the international community than any other government in recent history.

The accusations of a sell out to the US was because North Korea and Cuba were not among the list of countries that pledged aid to Sri Lanka or helped put pressure on the LTTE.

Now it looks like we may become a member state of India. From news reports in the papers recently it now seems that the senior indian deplomats are exerting some pressure on leading politians. The reason for this is because they don't want instability just 32km from their shoreline.

If the news paper reports are to be believed the diplomats have at least two leaders of the parties in the paliament dancing to their tune. Indeed todays daily mirror cartoon shows three prominent politians dancing at the end of a puppet string. The string is held by India.
