What's so civil about war?

May 24, 2004

I don't know who said it first but the first time i heard it was on a guns and roses track titled 'civil war'.

Call it what you will, Sri Lanka has been tormented by an armed conflict for twentry long years. Then in 2002 the then prime minister Ranil Wickramasinghe put a stop to it - at least temporarily.

A lot of external factors certainly helped him win this peace. For example since the 9/11 attack Mr. Goerge W. Bush has been going after terror organizations like a man possesed. Prabakaran isn't a lunatic like Bin Laden (though many would call him a megalomeniac) and had no intention of taking on the US Army, that is probably why jumped at the peace offers.

Until Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe became the prime minister the Sri Lankan foreign policy was largely dictaced by leftist ideas. Even whene Russia and China warmed up to the west Sri Lanka kept away. As a result none of the western countries so much as raised an eyebrow in the past when bombs went off.

Sri Lanka is an Island nation but no country is an Island you need support from other countries to survive and it was this support that Ranil Wickramasinghe managed to get. Now the left alliance is in power and we will become an island again. Or we might become an Indian State.

We have had only uncertainty in this country since the president dissolved parliament four years ahead of schedule. But One thing is certain war is coming.
